Convert PDF to text

Copying text out of a PDF page by page is slow, and the line breaks often come out scrambled. DMI's PDF to text tool reads the text layer of every page, puts the lines back in reading order from top to bottom, and saves everything as one plain .txt file you can open in any editor, search, or paste into a document. Tick "Mark page breaks" to add a --- Page N --- line between pages. Extraction runs entirely in your browser, so the document is never uploaded to a server. Scanned PDFs are pictures of text with no text layer, so run them through the OCR PDF tool first, then extract the text from the searchable result.

How it works

  1. Upload the PDF you want to extract text from.
  2. Choose whether to mark page breaks in the output.
  3. Click Extract text to download the .txt file.

Frequently asked questions

Is PDF to text conversion free?

Yes, extracting text from PDFs with DMI is completely free, with no signup and no limit on pages or files. The plain text file downloads straight away without a watermark or paid plan.

Are my files private and safe?

Yes. Text extraction runs entirely in your browser, so your PDF is never uploaded to a server. We log usage metadata, including your IP address, tool name, filename, and file size, for up to 12 months to help prevent abuse, but never the file contents.

Why is the text file empty for my scanned PDF?

A scanned PDF holds pictures of pages, not real text, so there is nothing to extract. Run it through the OCR PDF tool first to recognise the text, then use PDF to Text on the searchable result, or pick the plain text output in OCR PDF directly.
