Unlock PDF — remove the password

A password-protected PDF is safe to send, but typing the password every time you open it, or finding that you cannot print or copy from it, gets tiresome once the file is yours. DMI's Unlock PDF tool removes the encryption and saves a normal copy that opens without a password and has no print, copy or edit restrictions. Enter the password you were given; files that only have an owner password (they open freely but block printing or copying) unlock with the password left blank. It handles every standard PDF encryption method, from old 40-bit RC4 to AES-256. This tool does not crack or guess passwords: you need the password to unlock a file that asks for one. Decryption runs entirely in your browser, so your document and password are never uploaded to a server.

How it works

  1. Add the password-protected PDF.
  2. Enter its password, or leave it blank if the PDF opens without one.
  3. Click Unlock PDF to download a copy with no password.

Frequently asked questions

Is unlocking a PDF free?

Yes, removing a password from a PDF with DMI is completely free, with no signup, no watermark and no limit on how many files you unlock.

Are my files and passwords private?

Yes. Decryption happens entirely in your browser, so neither the PDF nor the password is ever uploaded to a server. We log usage metadata, including your IP address, tool name, filename, and file size, for up to 12 months to help prevent abuse, but never the file contents or passwords.

Can it unlock a PDF if I do not know the password?

Only if the PDF opens without a password and just restricts printing, copying or editing; those unlock with the password field left blank. If the PDF asks for a password to open, you need that password: the tool does not crack or guess passwords. Only unlock files you own or have permission to change.
