Red moves first. Tap a piece to see where it can go, then tap a point to move. Pieces you can move are ringed.
General (帥/將): one step along a line, inside the palace. The two generals may never face each other on an open file.
Advisor (仕/士): one step diagonally, inside the palace. Elephant (相/象): two points diagonally, blocked by a piece on the midpoint, and never across the river.
Horse (傌/馬): one step along a line then one diagonally outward, blocked by a piece on the first step. Chariot (俥/車): any distance along a line.
Cannon (炮/砲): moves like a chariot but captures only by jumping exactly one piece of either colour.
Soldier (兵/卒): one step forward; after crossing the river also one step sideways, never backward.
Checkmate wins, and so does leaving the other side with no legal move. The same position three times (our stand-in for the perpetual check and chase rules) or sixty moves without a capture is a draw.
